Screw the Cold Weather-Let's Think Myrtle

Well, winter-type chills have finally put in an appearance in SW Virginia.  Hope all have a restful holiday season.  Now let's start to get our minds on golf in Myrtle.

Over the next few months I will profile the courses we will be playing and post some videos.

Our first tee-time on June 2 will be at 1:00 p.m. at Man-O-War (see above).  Our first three rounds include lunch so we will gather at Man-O-War prior to the round.

Think warm.

Pairings 2016

In case you forgot or Doug, the new guy, didn't know, every day is a captain's choice.  As we are on vacation, the last thing any of us needs is to get upset about our golf game.  So, several years ago we shifted to a captain's choice format and added a little friendly competition.  I think it originally started when Charlie was looking for the cart girl at 8 AM for shots of Jack because his game had gone south.

Here are the pairings for this year. As is always the case, there may be someone you don't play with, and you won't play with anyone more than once.

Using a simple spreadsheet here is the "rotation".  Sixteen spots A-P that rotate.

This year's "draft" took place at BW3 in Blacksburg.  Names were drawn at random to fill spots A-P.

If we have a threesome for any reason, any day, that group will go off first.

2016 Rules and General Info.

OK, lots of info. in this update.  I will release the pairings next week.

Rule Changes -
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.  Well, not necessarily.  We WILL continue to play all rounds as captain's choice.   Last year there were two new "experimental" rules implemented.  One of which we will keep.

Once again, as is done in many captain's choice tourneys, this year we will require each team to use at least two (2) tee shots from each member of the team, regardless of whether it is a 4- or 3-man team.  This will be tee shots on any hole, regardless of whether it is a par 3, 4, or 5.

In the event that there are only three team members, the three players will alternate taking the 4th shot.

Wacky Hat/Outfit Day -

With mixed success we have done a wacky hat/outfit day the past couple of years.  Should you choose to participate, we will do this on day three at Legends-Parkland.  Past examples include Kyle dressed as Ricky Fowler, Chris dressed as the "you can't drink all day if you don't start early" guy.

Basic Information -

We are inside of a month til our gathering.  Be reminded that with our golf package, BREAKFAST AND LUNCH are included at the three Legend's courses this year (Friday/Sunday/Monday). We also get a couple of free beers at the clubhouse those days as well. No meal or beer is included at Tidewater.

The way this works, once we check in at the course with the golf vouchers, meal and drink vouchers will be given to us.  I have the golf vouchers.

This year we will take a break from the in condo dinners on Saturday and Sunday to allow more flexibility for folks to do different activities those nights, or to play an afternoon round, or whatever.  We can reevaluate for next year.

On Friday we need to meet at The Legends clubhouse.  I will check in at the pro shop to get both the golf and meal vouchers, so we can get our lunch that day prior to playing golf at the Parkland course.

Our first tee time at Moorland on Friday is 1:32 and we'll need to group up before hand.  Hopefully all will arrive in time for lunch.

For those coming down on Friday, you/we can check in at Legends condos after the first round.

After each round, I will distribute the prize money for the day. The winning team receives $160 each day.  In the event of a tie, like day one in 2012, we will  declare a definitive winner based on a tie-breaker (going with the lowest score on the #1 handicap hole and if still tied, moving to #2 handicap, the #3 until a winner is determined).  If there is a tie and we cannot complete the round due to weather, the money will be split (as happened a few years ago at Heathland).

After conversation with a few people, we will go with this rooming list.

1 - T Wilson, K. Buhrdorf, C. Mathers, K Mathers
2 - R Haswell, C Higgins, D Denston, T. Haswell
3 - D Lane, CK Allen, B. Swarthout, M. Neebe
4 - D. Moore, M Thompson, D Clemson, J. Healy

I will announce pairings (basically random) in a few days.

Rules for the course -

We do have to get to courses early.  While we have meals before each round we still need to be ready to go early.  It is suggested that we arrive ready, no later than 20 minutes before the first tee time.  It does take time to unload cars, get balls, tees, etc. together, load up carts and get out to the tees, etc.  What you do with the extra few minutes (practice putting, go to the range, go to the john, check out the pro shop or try to get a preview of the cart girls) is up to you.   I will have directions to courses to the one offsite course (Tidewater) for people and I'm sure most will have GPS in their cars.

No metal spikes allowed.  I know most people have gotten rid of metal spikes by now, but just in case.....................

No jeans allowed.

Collared shirts are required.  No one has trouble with mock turtles, just make sure there are no t-shirts.

Condos do have washers/dryers, so don't hesitate to pack light and do laundry there.

Like most of Myrtle Beach courses, the courses this year DO NOT allow coolers. So, be subtle if you take beer on the course. Some have coolers in bags which seem to be OK.  Of course, you can buy beverages at the course.  Telling the starter that the cooler doesn't have beer, but contains your insulin might work at some public course in Virginia, but the starters in MB will ask to look in the cooler.

Remember to bring any medication you need.  That includes aspirin, Pepto or anything else for your stomach or head.

Day 4 - Heathland

Day 4 in 2016 brings us back to home base.  Heathland was the first of the on-site Legend's courses and designed by Tom Doak.  Breakfast and lunch is provided at the Legends.

Heathland is probably the most open of the courses we will play, so it should make us feel better about our games.  When it opened, the Heathland course was named one of the Top 10 New Resort Courses in the World.

Check this review of  Heathland - Legends.  Enjoy the read and think warm weather.

Day 3 - Parkland

Day 3, Sunday has us on site at the Legends Parkland Course.  Today we have breakfast, lunch and 2 beers included.

Parkland was the third course built at the Legend's complex.  In a word, it is a Parkland-style course.  Parkland utilizes the natural terrain with contoured, tree-lined fairways, vast natural areas, deep-faced bunkers and massive, multi-level greens.

The Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday offers this review of the Legends - Parkland.

Day 2 - Tidewater

For those who arrived Friday, get some sleep (who am I kidding), just get ready for a drive on the first day to Tidewater Golf Club in North Myrtle. Breakfast and lunch are not included this day. Our tee time is at 8:00. With a little over a half hour driving time of a little over 30 minutes. We will need to hit the road at/by 7AM.

Tidewater may be South Carolina’s most awarded golf course and is recognized as a one of the premier North Myrtle Beach Golf Courses.

Tidewater Golf Club is arguably the area’s most scenic layout with eight holes playing along the Intracoastal Waterway or Cherry Grove Inlet. The third and 12th holes might be the best pair of par 3s on the East Coast, and the par 5th 13, which offers a view of the Atlantic Ocean, upstages both.

Nearly two decades of rave ratings prove that Tidewater Golf Club is simply one of the best golf courses on the Grand Strand. On its opening in 1990, the course was enthusiastically applauded as one of America’s truly great new layouts. Ranked in Golfweek’s Best Courses You Can Play in 2007, it has also recently made Golf Magazine’s “Top 100 You Can Play” listing. To this day, it remains the only layout ever to be named “Best New Course” by both Golf Digest and Golf Magazine.

Check out this review of Tidewater.

Meet The New Guy - Fire Marshal Doug

Doug Moore will be joining the group for Myrtle Beach 2016. Doug is a long-time resident of Roanoke; loves the area so much he has never left (born and raised). He resides with his wife and son, who is a senior at Northside and looking forward to college in the fall. His daughter attended Bridgewater College and currently a junior at Liberty University.

Doug started with the City of Salem Fire Department at 22 years old (currently in his 27th year with the city), working his way from firefighter to his current position as the City Fire Marshal. Always good to have his expertise around in the event of a Fireball or other related drink accident.

If the math is correct, we can celebrate his upcoming 50th birthday Myrtle Beach-style.

Doug has a passion for the outdoors, enjoying fishing, hiking, kayaking and golfing. I even recall him mentioning that he one time raced motor bikes but a lingering back injury halted that career.

He is also a current member of Blacksburg CC.

Please help me in welcoming Doug to the group. He is very excited and very much looking forward to the trip this year.

Day 1 - Moorland

Our opening course will be Legend's Moorland.  Moorland was recently named the 37th toughest course in America.  Of course that is from the back tees.  We will play a more comfortable, but no less challenging course for our first round in Myrtle.

The Moorland Course at Legends Resort is one of Myrtle Beach’s most talked about designs. The course is renowned for the size of its fairways and greens, but it’s the short, par 4 16th, known as Hell’s Half Acre, the people never forget.

Lunch and 2 beers are included.  Tee time is 1:30, so we'll need to meet at the clubhouse for lunch around noon.

Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday recently posted Great Scenery and Challenge Define Moorland.

2016 Change to Lineup

Well just when we thought everything was set, I got a note from our packager that World Tour was being used for a tournament.

Despite all his efforts, Brian was not able to switch around the courses to get us on and we had to make a change. He worked a little magic and got us on Tidewater with the same tee times and kept the package at the same rate.

Also, keep the lookout for a 16th golfer.

Our new lineup....
Fri 06/03/16      2:04     LEGENDS: PARKLAND 16 Golfers w/Carts
Sat 06/04/16      8:06    TIDEWATER GOLF CLUB 16 Golfers w/Carts
