TPC-Myrtle Beach

As we close out the 2010 journey to the Grand Strand, we play the only 5-Star course in the Myrtle Beach area.

Us on a 5-Star isn't something that I ever envisioned when Kevin, Kyle and I began our annual pre-summer journey.  Our initial goal seemed to be to play the cheapest rounds of golf available at Myrtle.  This year, we play nothing rated below 4 1/2 stars by Golf Digest.  The "worst" rated course was once rated by Golf Digest as the best new resort course in America.

Our closing course this year is the TPC of Myrtle Beach.  This course used to serve as host for the Senior Tour championship.   Check out these reviews of TPC and don't forget to check out the video.

Dining Favorite Closes

Those who have been part of the group the past couple of years will remember Chick N Bull, the dive bar near Prestwick CC where we have stopped for perhaps the best wings on the beach and some of the cheapest beer.  With 41 flavors of wings you couldn't go wrong.

While cruising a Myrtle Beach happy hour website, I noticed that Chick N Bull was no longer listed.  An e-mail to the site host revealed that the sign was no longer on the building and other sources, plus phone calls to the restaurant revealed that the phone has been disconnected.

A silent salute to you Chick N Bull.

Golf Digest Features Myrtle Beach

Several years ago, Golf Digest did a feature on buddies trips to Myrtle Beach.  While many were happy they did a feature on Myrtle, the authors tried to see how upscale they could go (including trying to wear tuxes to dinner, etc).  That, my friend, ain't a Myrtle Beach buddies trip.

This month's edition of Gold Digest once again did a feature on Myrtle Beach buddies trips and actually interviewed several groups who travel to the Grand Strand annually.  They also developed a list of the 60 Favorite courses.  Not sure of their methodology (and several on Myrtle Beach Golf Talk message board disagree).  Well, there will always be disagreements.  I personally don't think they should include private courses on the list.  But thought I would pass along link to the articles.  Enjoy.

Oyster Bay

The countdown clock is still ticking and we are getting close my friends.

Oyster Bay will be our third course of the weekend and is consistently listed as one of the top layouts at the beach since opening in 1983 as the "Best New Resort Course" in the country by Golf Digest.  Water views, gators, other wildlife and some of the toughest greens on the strand should make this a memorable round.

Make sure to check out the video tour on an earlier post.

This course will be a bit of a drive for us, but should be well worth the trip.
